The Bristol Red Sox played all of their home games from 1973 through 1982 at Muzzy Field. Located on Muzzy Street in Bristol, Muzzy Field has been in use since 1912 for both baseball and football. The grandstand, which still stands today, was built in 1939.
In a classic matchup in 1981, future major leaguers Ron Darling of Yale and Frank Viola of St. John's battled for eleven innings at Muzzy Field. The game was televised by the then-fledgling ESPN, which is also headquartered in Bristol.
Today, the field is used for local high school and college baseball games, and even in 2004 as an audition location for the television program American Idol.
From 84 East:
- Get off Exit 31 (West Street, Bristol Rt. 229)
- Take a left at the end of the exit (you are now on Rt. 229)
- Stay on Rt. 229 for a few miles (approximately 4 miles). You will pass by ESPN's world headquarters on your right.
- At your tenth (approximately) traffic light, take a left onto Rt. 72, just before an overhead rail road bridge.
- Stay straight through traffic light onto Memorial Boulevard
- Continue through 3 traffic lights
- At 4th traffic light bear right onto Park Street
- Follow Park street for about ½ mile
- Take a right onto Muzzy Street. Muzzy Field is right on the corner.
- Parking lot is at the end of Muzzy street.
From 84 West and 72 West:
- From 84 west get off Exit 33 (Rt.72)
- Follow expressway to the end (do not get off at exits 2 or 1)
- At the end of the exit take a right at the light (still Rt. 72)
- At 2nd light take a left (still Rt. 72)
- At 2nd take a left (onto Rt. 229)
- At First Light (very quick) take a right. You will have just passed under an overhead railroad bridge.
- At first light go straight onto Memorial Boulevard
- Keep straight and go through 3 traffic lights
- At 4th traffic light bear right onto Park Street (Rt.72).
- Follow Park Street for about ½ mile
- Take a right onto Muzzy Street. Muzzy Field is right on the corner.
- Parking lot is at the end of Muzzy Street.
